Diane Gwynn McWhorter - Founder/Voice & Piano

Diane Gwynn McWhorter has had a passion for music since she was 3 ½ years old and her mother brought home a baby grand piano. She enjoys sharing with her students her boundless enthusiasm for the joy of music. Diane founded DIANE GWYNN’S STUDIO OF MUSIC in order to provide a joyful, nurturing environment for students to learn the art of playing an instrument. The studio is dedicated to providing lessons in a stress-free, encouraging atmosphere so each child or adult progresses at their own pace. Diane feels that any involvement in music making can be beneficial mentally, emotionally, physically and socially.

Diane is passionate about sharing the knowledge she has accumulated through years of performing and teaching. She weaves piano lessons into her voice lessons so that all voice students are accomplished singers and can play the piano.

Many of her students are attending Bak Middle School of the Arts, and Dreyfoos School of the Performing Arts. Some of her students have majored in music and are now pursuing careers as professional singers. She is delighted that recently some of her students have performed on Broadway and Carnegie Hall.

Diane is a Lyric Soprano and has performed with The New York Grand Opera, Opera Theatre of New York, The Miami Opera, The Orlando Opera and the Palm Beach Opera Companies. She was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Company’s regional auditions and a semi-finalist in Sarah Caldwell’s American/Israel Foundation Competition. She had the privilege of performing the role of Kate Pinkerton in the opera Madame Butterfly in Central Park.

Her roles in the Broadway repertoire include: Eliza Doolittle/My Fair Lady, Maria/West Side Story, Marian/The Music Man and Maria/The/Sound of Music to name a few.

While performing in New York, Diane directed and performed her own One-Woman-Show off Broadway. teaching philosophy

Learning to play the piano, for both young and old, is a challenging yet greatly rewarding and enjoyable life experience.
In every lesson my goal as teacher and mentor is to fully support each student’s individual creativity, personal discoveries, and real joy at the piano.
In every lesson I teach:

  • injury-preventive piano technique
  • good posture and alignment as foundation for excellent technique
  • traditional, “classical” repertoire plus jazz and blues, pop, movie, and Broadway hits
  • music theory, ear training, sightreading, composition, and improvisation

I encourage all students of all ages and levels to improvise at the piano because all musical explorations are valid and contribute to a well-rounded music education.
